Event Description

A few weeks ago I received a call from a friend asking if I’d come and auction off a few craft items at a bake sale to raise money to help Rodney and his family. Rodney has been diagnosed with cancer in his shoulder. T he auction went for almost 4 hours and it was a BIG success with the help of a lot of friends and family members coming together to support their friend and local racing Hero!

This event was posted all over Facebook and a couple of Web sites and then a few days before the bake sale Corey Latham (a race reporter) wrote  and posted a great  article about  Rodney on www.race22.com  titled THE RACE OF HIS LIFE. The next day I started to receive phone calls and emails from people all over asking what they could do to help out and that they had just heard the news. That’s when we started putting this Racer’s Benefit together. Rodney has been in the racing business most all of his life and has been pretty successful both on and off the track. I’ll quote Phillip Walker as saying “Rodney has accomplished more with less than anyone I know!” and that says a lot about how determined Rodney is, how hard he has worked, and how much he loves the sport!  Although his driving style may not show it he has a very big heart…. just not on the track! I know I have raced against him and he has put me in one of his own cars and said “Try not to tear it up!” Lol He has done that with several people! He even took 2 cars to the Denny Hamlin Shootout a couple of years ago. One was for Marcos Ambrose to drive and when an oil line broke on it he gave up a chance to rub fenders with the likes of Denny, Tony Steward, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Bush, and others by giving his car to Marcos to race that night! I don’t know if I could’ve done that myself! I was disappointed that he did for a few minutes and then I realized he was a man of his word, he had promised to provide a car for Marcos to race for a good cause. Marcos drove the wheels off that night! He started way back and finished 6th. As we all watched him race we had to look around to make sure Rodney was with us and not in the car!  Lol

I have known Rodney and his brother Calvin (Nukey as we know him) since we were kids. We went to Reidsville Senior high and played football for the RAMS but our connection came before that. We grew up going to the local race tracks where our Dads were racing and unknowingly instilling a passion for the sport in us that will never go away.  It’s a family tradition for a lot of us but those of us who love the sport of racing are all considered family members! There are many stories to tell so come out and help a member of your racing family fight the fight of his life against cancer at this Benefit Auction April 27th at The Rock Church at 1901 Barnes Street Reidsville N.C. Sale starts at 10:00 Am  I will be posting pictures & updates to www.funwoodauction.com  RACER’S BENEFIT & TEAM COOK on Facebook. If you’d like to donate anything or bring a show car please contact Kenneth Smithey at funwoodauction@bellsouth.net or 336-344-8400 or Corey Latham at Corey@RACE22.com or 336-847-1050   www.race22.com

Thank you in advance for spreading the word!

Best Regards, Kenneth Smithey
