One of the newest builds is the 1940 Ford that was driven by NASCAR short track champion and Southern 500 winner Jim Reed. This is a 1/24th scale die-cast using a ERTL MLB Modified as the donor car.

I had a conversation with Jim Reed yesterday and he told me some interesting things about the Hackert Motors car.  He raced it at an indoor 1/5 mile concrete track at Kingsbridge Armory in the Bronx.  Kingsbridge began hosting midget races in the late 40's and also later hosted some stock car events.  Jim says he raced this car in 1949 or 1950, he didn't think it was raced under NASCAR sanctioned events.  He thought it was sanctioned by the American Race Driver's Club that hosted weekly racing during the winter.  Regarding the unusual flame job on the car, Jim says he painted it himself, copying a newspaper advertisement for Blue Coal, which is a coal for use in fireplaces.  He took some ribbing for the paint job, since the flames point straight upward "like a car burning in a parking lot".

Here is Jim Reed's garage in Peekskill NY, taken by me when visiting Peekskill. I remember seeing trucks for sale here all the time when we would go and visit when I was younger, but it seems not to be doing much there these days. This is the building his race cars were prepared in, I believe.

My family is froom Peekskill so naturally I've been a Jim Reed fan since I first learned of him. My mom recalls at least some of his cars residing at my great-great-grandfather's junkyard in Peekskill. I wish I had pictures, and I wish I had been old enough to remember being there!
