I worked for Ronnie Thomas most of my career but in the mid 80's as Ronnie scaled back his "Cup" racing I helped J.D. We would often stay in the same hotel and we would ride back and forth to the track togather and eat togather. He was truly a gentleman, a good racer, a great mechanic and someone that you were glad to have as a friend. I could not make it to the Watkins Glen on that fateful day but it changed my life forever. I got out of Cup after his accident and still think about J.D. often. He never got the attention he deserved as well as some of the other great unsung heroes. Randy Quesenberry

In 1967 J.D. drove a '65 Chevelle for Pete Brewer at Rockingham Speedway and Sanford Motor Speedway.

J.D. is not going anywhere. His name is on the granite monument here at the former Augusta International Raceway.

I helped JD in the early 70's. Stayed in touch later on. Just recently found and purchased a car JD drove in the 80's. We hope to soon restore the car back to the way it was when he drove it.We race old nascar stock cars on road courses. May or may not race his.
If anyone has info on other JD cars, please call me.

finally met j.d. thru a buddy in the USAF when I was stationed in Fayettville. we went up to the shop in Sanford and helped him work on his '74 Daytona 500 car. Harold and I did the radiator ductwork (we were USAF sheetmetal men)
and some other misc. metal work on the car for him. I would go to the track with James Hylton, and help J.D. at his shop, until i got out of the USAF. J.D.'s son Jeff was a friend of mine, and a talented driver in his own right. We stayed at the same motels, ate at the same resturants, slept in the same rest areas on the way to far away tracks, and helped each other at the track. More often than not when small teams went to Dover, Riverside, Pocono, Michigan, we'd have to get guys from several teams to make up an over the wall pit crew. We've stopped three race cars in one pit more than once. (the leading car got to stop first, etc ) confusing, exhausting, but fun. Cup sure has changed in the last twenty years or so. Went to the funeral to see an old friend off....still miss James and J.D. trading cigars.

remember jd as a very nice humble hard working down to earth good ole boy. took many photos of him at big tracks and at dirt tracks in NC and he was always cooperative and accomodating.
