I have spent almost 25 years researching the racing activities of Carl Kiekhaefer, including Mexico (1951-1953), AAA (1954-1955) and NASCAR (1955-1956). With the assistance of Charlie Strang and many others, I have been able to examine the Kiekhaefer racing program from the inside out. Carl and his talented group of engineers invented the pleated paper air filter element, implemented an engine building and dynamometer testing program that was years ahead of its time and developed parts for the Chrysler and Dodge race cars. Chrysler Corporation finished the engineering work and then manufactured the parts just for Carl Kiekhaefer. In other words, Carl ran his own factory racing operation, with assistance from Chrysler Division, Dodge Division and Chrysler Engineering. Charlie Strang designed/engineered heavy duty spindles and axle shafts, and redesigned the intakes, cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds for the 1956 Dodge D500-1 engines. Chrysler finished the engineering work on the new, Kiekhaefer racing parts, gave the components factory part numbers, tooled up and produced a small run of the manifolds and heads, and then sold them to Carl Kiekhaefer as factory-made, NASCAR-approved racing hardware! Charlie Strang is now 94 years old, but remembers much of the stock car racing program, as he ran the night shift, while Carl ran the day shift. Yes, the Kiekhaefer stock car racing program operated 24 hours a day. This fact is confirmed by the time entries in the dynamometer logs, which covered all hours of the day and night!
