Ray died in July 1963, South Boston Speedway, driving purple #9 modified owned by Frank Steelman, Jr., Boonville, NC. Ray was subbing for Ken Rush who had a broken ankle. Bobby Isaac had driven the Steelman car 1958-61.

The following is posted by the late driver Ralph Rose's daughter, June Rose Hudgins about Ray Platte in the Ralph Rose Scrapbook section of The Vintage Racer:

June writes:

"This is a portrait of Ray Platte taken the same time as my dad's. Ray and his wife Minnie were always fun and mischievous at the races. There was never a dull moment in the pits with them both, and my mom and dad used to double-date with them before marriage. Ray and Ralph were among those who would drag race on what was known as the 5 mile stretch in Virginia Beach in the late '40's.

Sadly, Ray Platte was killed in a wreck at South Boston Speedway, VA. He was driving Bobby Issac's car that day. My mother, Toni, encouraged and helped organize the Ray Platte Memorial Race held at Langley Field Speedway to honor him and his wonderful family. Doug Yates of NC won the race and presented the trophy to a young Ray Platte, Jr. It was a day I'll never forget.

He was a champion in his own right, and my most favorite person at the tracks next to my father. He always called me doll baby, and on more than one occasion would "steal" me out of our family car and carry me around on his shoulders in the pits."
