Bristol 300 7/20/1968

BRISTOL 300Bristol, Tn.  July 20, 1968The 10th Grand Touring race of 1968 was held at the Bristol Motor Speedway and was 300 laps on the 1/2 mile paved oval. Bunkie Blackburn won the pole position in Smokey’s Camaro, at least I think it was Smokey’s Camaro. One report I have list a Camaro and I know Bunkie had driven the car earlier but I also have a report that says he drove a Cougar. Donnie Allison started on the outside of the front row in his Huggins’ Mustang and led 244 laps on his way to…See More

Oldest son of Wayne Andrews. Growing up I did not know there was anything else to do but go to the race track on Saturday night and watch daddy race. I can't imagine a kid having more fun than I did. The memories are priceless. Did a little racing myself on dirt and paved short tracks, even got to do some road course racing.
How long have you been a race fan?
All my life.

Bowman-Gray Stadium regulars didn't win but dominated the top 5 of the modified race at the Daytona short track on the back stretch.

All were third generation drivers. The Myers brothers and a Fleming. The Fleming kid is young. Is he Frank's son?

The test of a man is the fight that he makes.

The grit that he daily shows,

The way that he stands on his feet and takes

Fate's numerous bumps and blows.

A coward can smile when there is naught to fear

When nothing his progress bars,

But it takes a man to…

Rusty Remains

This past Saturday I took a walk in the woods to talk with God and clear my head. It was an area that I had been to many times but it seemed different that day. As a boy I used to walk the path through these woods from our back yard to my great grandparents house but the path is no longer visible. The place I grew up on is no longer in the family so I stopped at the property line and tried to remember where the path was but the back side of the plot had been cleared years ago.

My mind…

Thanks for the birthday message.  I always remember that Wayne's sons have the same names as my first and last name.  I retired from Raleigh PD nine years ago and worked many years with Randy Deaton.  I'm sure there are many stories from both sides there!  Hope you are doing well.
